SLOTSKÆLDEREN

This is one of Denmark’s oldest restaurants and the most traditional you can find in the smørrebrød genre. The large selection of smørrebrød is arranged on a buffet. This layout, which was the norm 100 to 200 years ago, has slowly disappeared.

The novel corona virus crisis has, of course, made a buffet layout more difficult, but owner and head chef Frank Due has maintained the tradition by placing a glass shield in front of the food.

Frank Due, former chef and waiter at a Michelin starred restaurant, was initially hired to be a waiter in the 1990s. But his gastronomic advice transformed Slotskælderen from a popular smørrebrød restaurant to one of the very best. Since then, several new, ambitious players have surpassed Slotskælderen’s smørrebrød, though it is still of good quality.

But what really sets Slotskælderen apart from the rest is the service and authentic atmosphere in the old basement restaurant. It has been equipped with the same furniture for 100 years. Entering this time machine puts you in a position to experience what it was like to eat at such a restaurant in the days of old.
