Kronborg restaurant is situated in the centre of Old Copenhagen in the cosy and well-maintained basement of a building from the 1700s. It serves a wide variety of classic smørrebrød with a modern twist, and to the untrained eye, the menu may seem rather ordinary, since it doesn’t boast about organic or homemade produce, even though most of the ingredients are exactly that.
Skilled chef Jimmi Bengtson made Kronborg’s smørrebrød for eight years, before he left in 2020. But his style, which, could be described as traditionalist, seems to be maintained, as owners Walther Griesé and Claes Petersen, who work as hosts in the restaurant, have a clear idea of what they want to achieve. When they bought the restaurant back in 2012, they brought a hitherto mediocre restaurant up to a level among the best.
The ambience is very cosy, and the decor old-fashioned, with oil paintings, brass lamps, and polished wood. However, there is a contemporary air to the restaurant thanks to the very able waiters, who might remind you of English butlers with their understated manners and classic uniform of white shirt, black vest and black trousers.
